Leaf on graph paperNovember is here, and the fall season is in full force. If you’re looking for new and interesting craft ideas to keep yourself and your kids busy, there is no better time of year than this. The season and the upcoming holidays lend themselves to all sorts of creative activities, and fall is a great time for nature-related crafts and projects. If you need some inspiration to get you started, here are a few awesome autumn art projects to get you started, guaranteed to be fun for everyone.

  • Make a paper plate scarecrow. Glue a paper plate face to a piece of construction or poster paper. You can use real hay to give him hair, or cut thin strips of yellow construction paper. Yellow yarn works as well. Cut a simple hat pattern out of brown construction paper, and let your child decorate it before glueing it on. Pick up some googly eyes from the craft store, and use a button for the nose. Use a permanent marker to draw a mouth.
  • Make an autumn collage. Use the natural beauty of the season to make a fun craft project. Half the excitement of this project is in finding the materials. Pick a day with fine fall weather and go on a nature expedition. Gather fall leaves in all kinds of colors as well as pebbles, flowers, small sticks, and anything else that appeals. Your kids can use glue to affix these found treasures to a piece of posterboard or cardboard in whatever patterns they like.
  • Make hand turkeys a tradition. You know this project; it’s a classic. Trace your child’s hand, palm down, on a piece of paper. Alternatively, you can use something like finger paint and have them place their painted fingers and palm flat on the paper to get the handprint. The fingers are the turkey’s feathers, and you can draw the beak and other details of the turkey’s head on the thumb. If you do this every fall, you’ll have a great record of your child’s growth – as well as a collection of creative and colorful turkeys!
  • Pumpkins aren’t just for Halloween. Pumpkins, as well as decorative squashes, make great crafts and cute decorations and centerpieces, even after October 31st. And the possibilities are endless. Paint scenes or faces on them or make them funny hats and fake glasses to wear. Use them to decorate the mantel, the front porch, or the Thanksgiving table. This can be a lot of fun.

These are just a few fun fall craft ideas, but there are countless more out there. The fall season is full of beauty, and with a little creativity you can bring that beauty into your crafting routine. Just look to the natural colors and familiar rituals of the season for inspiration.
